1 February 2019: How to Achieve Peace in the Middle East
First, we have to recognize this is not a specific problem, such as the "Palestinian problem," see New York Times, 16 January 2019. This region is dominated by Arab and Muslim countries who govern based on hatred, terrorism and tribalism. Peace is not possible in this context. The people who live in these countries are capable of peace - move them to the United States and they are very hard working, responsible members of society. But we have to change the political world of the Middle East.
How do we rid the Middle East of a culture of violence? We can start to organize locally, to build a movement to change this culture, most likely through hundreds of different types of activities that are capable of creating change in a very small way that build on each other, whether it is cultural exchanges or advisory boards. Southeast Michigan has a large Middle East population which we should tap, who understand the region and what their residents can do.
We need to promote democratic traditions in the Middle East, particularly freedom of speech, the rule of law, transparent and honest government, compromise to achieve goals and tolerance of opposing points of view. In addition, there needs to be widespread condemnation of terrorism and violence.
Are you aware of individuals or groups already doing this?. If not, perhaps we can make some efforts to start.
Let me know what you think.
