10May18: Get Involved!
My son Sam shared this Facebook post:
FB FRIEND POST: "I spoke with a young person just out of college today, she is educated and intelligent. She did not vote yesterday and has no faith that anything will ever get better. For as long as she can remember we have always had bad roads, schools and infrastructure. She does not believe tax increases will help, as the money raised will simply be mismanaged and make no difference in our current state of affairs. She accepts that this is where we are as its all she has ever known and sees no way of fixing it by participating in the political process. I think her views represent the perspective of many of our best and brightest hopes for the future. I can't really blame her for thinking and feeling this way. Sadly with no hope we are doomed, America was a good idea for awhile. But from here on out, it is likely to only get worse. For those of us who knew when it was better and know that it can be better, it is like watching the slow death of a loved one, deteriorating day by day, very sad. If the young people have no hope of change, I think its just about over and done."
This was my response:
If we examine history, making changes to society has always been hard, whether it was the biblical prophets exhorting people not to sin in major ways, or women fighting for the right to vote, or demanding justice for minorities. Often people work for decades and may not see major changes. That's just the way it is. But if we work hard, it does make a difference, although we may not always see it. Anita Hill suffered greatly in speaking about sexual harassment, and until a year ago, may not have felt it was worth it. But her "dropping a grain of sand on the sandpile", eventually caused an avalanche of changes. So keep fighting for what you believe in!
