16 October 2022: Don't kvetch - vote!
Don't kvetch - vote! (Kvetch is the Yiddish word for complaining).
Actually, voting is the minimum moral requirement of citizenship.
If you want society to be better than it is now, you must be politically active. Even if you want to keep things the same, you should be politically active, in some way.
You have many choices on what to support: it could be candidates or public officials, political parties, political organizations, issues (rights of women, minorities, children, LGTBQ; climate change, environment), issue organizations (Planned Parenthood, Southern Poverty Law Center, ACLU, Promote the Vote) or nonprofits (League of Women Voters, AARP). You can also support a public institution (library, schools, colleges or universities, city government).
Yes, it is frustrating and difficult and may take more time than you would like. But we are adults and that is the way it is and this is what we need to do.
Although "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty" (source unknown, see https://www.monticello.org/research-education/blog/eternal-vigilance/), we need to do more than "keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties." because the danger is here. We must act. What we do is up to us, but it should be more than we did last year if we want things to get better.
Rabbi Tarfon, in Pirkei Avot (part of the Talmud), said, "It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it". This means we have to do our share. Find something to start working on and go from there. It will make you a better person and will make society better.
