26 November 2020: I am thankful for Joe Biden's wisdom
Thanksgiving 2020:
I am thankful for the wisdom of President-Elect Joe Biden. Although I previously thought he should aggressively challenge Donald Trump's attack on free and fair elections, I now acknowledge that by acting cautiously, by "suing for relief in the court of public opinion", he has achieved better results:
1. During the 16 days that it took for the General Services Administration to "ascertain" that Joe Biden is the President-Elect, numerous State and Federal officials, current and former governmental employees, business leaders, foreign leaders and others concluded, on their own terms, that declaring Joe Biden to be President-Elect was the proper thing to do. This was a much better result than having a Court make this determination and force it upon them. In addition, numerous Judges, many Republican, stood up to Donald Trump and enforced our election laws. This will likely have a long term impact of strengthening our democratic heritage.
2. Amazingly, even Donald Trump agreed with the ascertainment. Based on his past conduct, it seems likely he would have fought vigorously against a judicial determination.
3. Did this prolonged process help some Trump followers come to grips with the election results and strengthen their understanding and belief in free and fair elections? If so, this would be another positive result of the Biden approach.
Of course, our US and State governments still need to fix the deficiencies uncovered during this election, and we the people need to support those who stood up for our democratic traditions and shame and shun those who did not.
