6 February 2020: We have not done anything wrong
Recent email that I sent:
Dear Rabbi zzz,
Thank you for speaking at the Anti-Semitism forum at Adat Shalom a few weeks ago. I am still thinking about your statement “We have not done anything wrong,” and I must disagree in part. Obviously nobody has done anything that deserves the violence inflicted on the Jewish community or other communities. But it is clear, at least to many of us, that this country is led by a white nationalist who is supported by the Republican Party and 40% of the American people. I would suggest that if you are not fighting him and his party, you are doing something wrong. This violence against Jews and other minorities is a foreseeable consequence of his power and will continue until he is removed from office and his party, and all of its followers, have diminished influence.
Trump may not be precisely a Hitler of the 1930’s, but the situation is not that different. We cannot be silent. We cannot be passive. We have to use our brainpower and experience to fight white nationalism wherever it occurs. Those who are passive on this issue are part of the problem.
I would be happy to discuss further.
