Tom Friedman of the New York Times posted a great article about a Biden administration strategy to simultaneously deal with Israel’s security, a Palestinian state and Arab-Israeli relations, which makes sense to me.
Some highlights are:
an unprecedented U.S. diplomatic initiative to promote a Palestinian state — NOW. It would involve some form of U.S. recognition of a demilitarized Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip that would come into being only once Palestinians had developed a set of defined, credible institutions and security capabilities to ensure that this state was viable and that it could never threaten Israel. Biden administration officials have been consulting experts inside and outside the U.S. government about different forms this recognition of Palestinian statehood might take.
There is legitimate concern that the Palestinians are not ready for statehood. After all, the “innocent” Palestinians not only elected Hamas to govern them in Gaza and kept it in power, but they built their missiles and tunnels, allowed Hamas to turn Gaza into a huge military base and have been silent while Hamas used Palestinians as human shields or “human sacrifices”. However, perhaps the Biden strategy will lead to the emergence of some Palestinians who are willing to defy Hamas, build credible institutions and strive to improve the life of Palestinians. This would be a great step forward for everyone.
