Awarding excellence in Detroit Public Schools

I am pleased to have set up an annual award, the Pernick Prize, which gives scholarships to Detroit Public School students excelling in Mathematics, Medicine / Science and Public Service. This award is in honor of my parents, Anne and the late Larry Pernick, who grew up in Detroit and attended Detroit Public Schools.
For 2023, the awardees are Siam Hossain, Cass Tech (Mathematics); Alexandra Soto, Western International (Medicine); and Tanya Brown, Renaissance (Public Service).

I am working on getting more information out about the incredible accomplishments of these students.
“I’m hoping other students will spend more time and focus in these areas, as well as education in general,” he said. “And another motivating factor, maybe some schools will improve their programs, maybe we’ll have a math club, science club or medicine club. Maybe some other businesses or organizations will pick up on this and think it’s a good idea and invest more in these areas.” The Detroit Jewish News
I think it is important for all of us, including businesses and business owners, to support our communities. This not only benefits the recipients, our employees, communities and nation but a strong focus on public service and community helps prevent business success from over-inflating our egos, which can be dangerous to us (see examples in our daily newspapers).
