This essay consists of a letter from Oakland County, Michigan, County Executive Dave Coulter. I agree that diversity makes us stronger, more united and more productive:
Every once in a while, the press gets it exactly right—and that happened this morning.
I’ve been saying for years that Oakland County can be both a thriving economic engine for Michigan and a leader in tackling some of the most intractable challenges we face. Those two goals are not mutually exclusive.

I’m proud that Oakland County has moved beyond the politics of bigotry, hatred, and division. We stand in clear contrast to a Trump-era approach that believes undermining our rights and values somehow makes us stronger—it does not.
We still champion diversity, equity, and inclusion. We’re still finding creative solutions for affordable housing and supporting working families. And we’re not stopping. I believe we’re strongest when we lift one another up—when we are bound together by threads of understanding and compassion. That’s not just my belief; it’s the best of our American story.
If I have anything to say about it, it will be our future—and our legacy.
With each of us doing our part and working together, I know we’ll continue to move Oakland County forward.
All the best,
Dave Coulter
Oakland County Executive
P.S. I think this part of the Op-Ed says it best: "Oakland County is in a stronger position today than it was 10 years ago," he (Coulter) said. "And we have gotten here without drama, destruction or division." That’s the kind of progress—and leadership—I'm committed to!
