In his recent column, Stephen Collinson summarized the lifetime behavior of Donald J. Trump:
Trump thinks rules are for other people. He will always break them in seeking more wealth, more attention, or more votes.
If reality doesn’t get the ex-president what he wants, he conjures a new one.
Trump is compelled always to fight — even when stepping back would be smarter.
And when accountability finally arrives, he sees justice as an act of persecution by his enemies. CNN
As a business owner for 40+ years and a lawyer (retired), I know the importance of following the rule of law and the consequences of not doing so. This Trumpian behavior of flouting the rules will predictably lead to bad consequences (e.g. court verdicts against Trump of $83.3 million for defamation and over $450 million (including interest) for business fraud). If our society ignores these rules for many or even selectively for some, it will not be able to maintain its stability and it will fail.
Remarkably, a large segment of the population still supports Donald J. Trump, who brags about how he is above the law, has absolute immunity and can do whatever he wants without recourse.
How can we trust the judgment of these Trump supporters, at least on public policy issues?
