This CNN video shows Dr. Sanjay Gupta interviewing Dr. Anthony Fauci to discuss what happened when Dr. Fauci corrected then President Donald J. Trump about the effectiveness of ivermectin for treating COVID-19:
My take home points are:
As physicians, we should demonstrate integrity to protect our patients or public health, even if our employer disagrees. We can get another job but we cannot get our integrity back if we are dishonest or afraid to speak the truth.
Donald J. Trump is a danger to the health of Americans because he regularly makes statements that endanger our health without any regard for the consequences:
In the above video, he endangered the health of millions of Americans to promote a disproven claim about the effectiveness of Ivermectin. This led his many followers to take this ineffective and sometimes dangerous drug, causing severe episodes of confusion, ataxia, seizures and hypotension as well as creating more distrust between physicians and patients overall.
Regarding COVID-19, Trump’s statements have caused much of the public to believe that the COVID pandemic was a hoax and contributed to the marked increase in COVID related deaths in Republican versus Democratic regions and a marked reduction in COVID related vaccinations.
Since Trump rarely apologizes (“I Will Apologize Sometime In The Hopefully Distant Future If I'm Ever Wrong”), this amplifies the impact of his misstatements and makes him even more dangerous to public health.
Other likely dangers to our healthcare system, if Trump is elected, are indicated here.
