One way you can have a major impact on the election results this November is to communicate with young adults, 18-29, in your family to be sure they are registered to vote and have a plan to cast their ballots during the upcoming election cycle. For a variety of reasons, this age group has a very low voter participation rate. The Michigan Secretary of State data for the 2022 election show that 1.6 million citizens ages 18-29 were eligible to vote but 1 million citizens in this age group did not cast ballots in 2022. Donald Trump won the state of Michigan in 2016 by 10,704 votes.
Please talk to the young adults in your life this week to get them to take action on making a voting plan by September 17th.
The Michigan Secretary of State office has a link Michigan.gov/StudentVoting that provides comprehensive information on voting options for students and Michigan citizens. You can check registration status, register to vote, and request an absentee ballot online through this website.
As a result of the passage of the Promote the Vote ballot measure in 2022, voting is now more accessible in Michigan. These are ways that it is more convenient than ever for young adults to vote:
They can sign up for an absentee ballot and have it sent to their college address. There is pre-paid postage on the return envelope so once completed, it just needs to be dropped in a mailbox.
Michigan has 9 days of early voting starting the Saturday prior to November 5th. Students can update their registration to a college address and vote early in-person at a polling site in their college location or keep their registration at their permanent address and return home during that 9 days to vote at an early voting location.
Election Day registration is allowed but every effort should be made to encourage young people to have a plan to register and vote prior to election day to avoid last minute conflicts that keep them from casting their votes.
Share this information with family and friends to multiply the impact of getting more young voters engaged!
Let me know if you have any questions related to voting and registration options. Thanks for your help with engaging young voters and saving our democracy!
