As a lifelong Michigander, I encourage those living in the red or purple states below to consider moving to Michigan, whose government is working hard to protect the rights of women and LGBTQ people and the voting rights of everyone.
Protecting the rights of women
Michigan now provides women full rights and dignity regarding healthcare. Last year, Michigan voters enacted a constitutional amendment that guarantees reproductive rights for women and girls, including access to abortion:
We will make Michigan a leader, a place where everyone is respected and protected under the law, a place where women make their own decisions, per Governor Whitmer.
These reproductive rights allow medical and surgical abortions under pre-Dobbs conditions without fear of criminal charges against physicians, women, girls or those who assist them. They confirm the continued availability of current birth control methods and in vitro fertilization. Physicians can act in the best interest of their pregnant patients, particularly when ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, severe fetal anomalies and other pregnancy complications occur. Pregnant women and girls will not be prosecuted for miscarriages. Finally, all women and girls, whether pregnant or not, can get appropriate treatment for auto-immune disorders, cancer and other diseases even if the treatment might harm an unborn baby present now or theoretically present in the future.
Protecting the rights of LGBTQ people
Michigan has a message to all LGBTQ+ Americans and their allies who feel unsafe and unwanted in their state: You Belong Here.
From Michigan’s Attorney General Dana Nessel and others:
The State of Michigan recently added LGBTQ protections to its anti-discrimination law, in contrast to Florida, Texas, Tennessee and other red states that are hostile to LGBTQ people.

Strengthening the voting rights of all its residents
Since 2018, Michigan has fortified its democracy by quickly implementing important and popular electoral reforms that have increased voter participation and representation in the state. While some states have struggled to implement meaningful reforms—and many have moved in the wrong direction by restricting access to the ballot box—Michigan has proved that transformational change can be accomplished in just a few short years. In addition, Michigan’s government focuses on supporting the middle class, not the superwealthy at the expense of everyone else.
The Make it in Michigan budget will build a bright future for our state,” said Whitmer in a statement Wednesday night. “It lowers costs on health care, preschool, meals for kids, higher education, housing, and workforce training. It will help us keep fixing the damn bridges, replacing lead pipes, and protecting public safety. And it will power ‘Make it in Michigan,’ our comprehensive vision for economic development so we can win more projects, invest in people, and revitalize places. I am so grateful to the new leadership in the legislature for getting this done. Let’s keep our foot on the accelerator.
