Our daily lives are heavily influenced by the evil actions of Vladimir Putin, Donald J. Trump and Rupert Murdoch.
This essay focuses on Putin. Trump is the subject of four indictments, one active gag order in Colorado and another pending in Washington D.C. The gag orders may be his undoing even before his “slam dunk” prosecutions since he seems unable to follow court orders and may be held in contempt of court for violating them. In addition, a New York judge ruled yesterday that Trump persistently committed fraud by inflating the value of his assets and stripped him of control over some of his signature New York properties.
Murdoch has resigned as Chairman of Fox and although his son and successor Lachlan promises to continue his father’s policies, he is unlikely to have his father’s unique capacity to do evil. In addition, Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787 million to settle a defamation lawsuit but still has pending defamation lawsuits against it by Smartmatic, former marine Ray Epps and ex-Biden official Nina Jankowicz. In addition, New York City Pension Funds filed suit against Fox for neglecting its duty to shareholders by broadcasting lies.
That leaves Putin, still in power, who declared war against Ukraine in February 2022, with these effects:
Causing 500,000 dead or wounded Ukrainians and Russians, including an estimated 120,000 dead Russians and 70,000 dead Ukrainians.
Severely damaging Russia’s future due to the marked decline in Russian oil and gas exports, a brain drain of 1 million Russians, including 100,000 information technology specialists and a shrinking economy.
Changing Russia’s image from a superpower to an “incompetent, corrupt, and poorly run state.”
Disrupting global food security because Russia and Ukraine, prior to the war, exported 34% of the world’s wheat, 17% of its corn and >70% of its sunflower oil. War related declines have caused higher food prices and political instability in vulnerable countries.
Causing extreme civilian harm within Ukraine, in addition to deaths and injuries, such as limited access to food, water and other essential supplies; catastrophic damage to civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and the power grid; and close to 6 million refugees.
Causing a global slowdown of economic growth and more inflation.
Causing continuous war crimes by Russian forces.
Putin has been devastating for the world and Russia. Even if Putin is removed from power or dies today, it likely will take decades to restore the damage he has caused.
What can we do to hasten the end of Putin’s regime?
Stop supporting American companies still in Russia and helping to fund Russia’s war, including Benetton, Carl’s Jr., Cloudflare, Emirates and Etihad Airways, Guess, Sbarro Pizza, Shell, Stryker and TGI Friday’s. If you are currently a customer, I suggest you stop doing business with them. If possible, email their CEO and tell them why, such as “I refuse to deal with a company that continues to support Putin’s war by staying in Russia.”
Stop purchasing products made in Russia (i.e. read labels).
Write your Senators or Members of Congress and tell them that you support strong US support of Ukraine, which is fighting to preserve the international order that has taken decades to achieve.
Note that Russian-Americans are NOT the problem - many of them are suffering greatly due to the war as their family members and friends are killed, injured or under threat.
Our actions make a difference, even if small, because many grains of sand dropped on a sandpile eventually cause it to topple (Emerson: “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”) When we act, it also encourages others to act to and gives us new ideas of additional things we can do.
