The 2024 Voter Challenge has started for the general election on 5 November 2024 for 8 Michigan communities. This challenge provides awards to communities based on their voter turnout. Early voting starts in October 2024 so all eligible voters (U.S. citizens at least 18 years of age by Election Day, a Michigan resident for at least 30 days by Election Day, not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison) should make sure they are registered to vote, start thinking about how they plan to vote (early voting, absentee voting, voting on election day) and start learning about the candidates.
For the 2018, 2020 and 2022 elections, I conducted a Voter Challenge among the neighboring Next Door communities where I live: Berkley, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak and Southfield. Winners are based on the official voter turnout from Oakland County Elections and the winning communities select charities to receive the awards.
Prizes:
First place: $1000, second place: $500, third place: $250
80% turnout: $500, 75% turnout: $250
Cities only get one award
For 2022, the winners and their charities were:
First place, Huntington Woods, 79.09% turnout, $1,000 given to the Government Alliance on Race & Equity (GARE) as part of the city’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiative (see also Detroit Jewish News article 2021).
Second place, Pleasant Ridge, 76.03% turnout, $500 split between Ferndale Free Clinic and Ferndale Youth Assistance.
Third place, Berkley, 70.65% turnout, $250 split between Friends of Berkley Library and Friends of Berkley Parks & Recreation.
For 2024, voter participation should be higher due to early in person voting, easier absentee voting and it being a Presidential election. I hope every city gets an award. I will be contacting the city councils of these eight communities to see how we can promote increased voter turnout, which helps makes communities stronger and, I believe, makes individuals more successful in life. I will post more information as the election gets closer.
Notes:
This is a nonpartisan activity. My goal is for every eligible voter in these communities to vote. If you have a partisan comment, please email me at Nat@PathologyOutlines.com.
I am happy to share my knowledge about setting up this program with individuals in other communities but they have to finance and run their own programs.
This program is financed and run by me and nobody else. There is no hidden agenda.
Please forward this information to anyone you know in these 8 communities.
