I recently made a remarkable visit to Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto) and wanted to discuss my impressions.
My biggest surprise was how RESPECT permeates Japanese culture. For 11 days, I walked 4 hours daily but never saw an angry or rude person, Japanese or otherwise. This, of course, is different from how Americans act. When I did something wrong, I was corrected politely. The Japanese bowed to me regularly. It was quite striking.
Why are Americans so angry? Why are we so quick to argue with each other, to criticize or demean others? Of course, we think we have our reasons but I am sure the Japanese have the same reasons - they just act politely.
I can’t change the country but I can work on myself.
For 2025, I have resolved to be more respectful towards others, particularly if they offend or insult me. It may be a challenge, but I am up to it.
How about you?
