The Biden administration, Israel's defense minister, many Israelis (although less after the October 7 terrorist attack) and some Palestinians agree that the optimal goal for a stable Middle East is to create a non-terrorist, relatively non-corrupt Palestinian country that coexists with Israel and other regional countries.
The barriers to this goal are:
Inept Palestinian leadership. In 2006, Palestinians in Gaza elected Hamas, a known terrorist group committed to the extermination of Israel, as their government. The leaders of Hamas are (obviously) opposed to a non-terrorist Palestinian country. However, Palestinian leadership in the United States also appears to be opposed. These leaders are obsessed with Palestinian military losses in wars that Palestinians started with the goal of destroying Israel, beginning in 1948 (with other Arab nations) and continuing to the October 7, 2023 war started by the Palestinian government of Hamas. These leaders continue to attempt to damage or destroy Israel and have made little to no effort to create a viable, non-corrupt, non-terrorist Palestinian country. They have also done little to oppose the Hamas government. They may not have yet violated U.S. law that forbids providing material support to terrorist organizations, but their actions come close. To create better lives for Palestinians in the Middle East, Palestinians need to find leadership that works hard to improve the daily lives of Palestinians and believes in coexistence with Israel.
Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel. Netanyahu so vigorously opposed a Palestinian country that he propped up Hamas at the expense of the Palestinian Authority and ignored warnings of the October 7 terrorist attack. To stay in power and avoid a corruption trial, he appears willing to do almost anything that his governing coalition wants, which includes avoiding a successful Palestinian country. Fortunately, there is strong opposition to his rule and he appears to be on his way out of office.
Palestinians in Gaza and elsewhere. Palestinians are high achievers who should have won many Nobel Prizes and created a prosperous country to rival Israel. Instead, due to their obsession with destroying Israel, their “great” accomplishments are (a) refugee status for 75+ years, (b) being Pioneers of Global Terrorism, (c) popularizing childhood suicide bombers and explosive (suicide) belts, (d) creating the world’s first terrorist society in Gaza and (e) popularizing the act of human sacrifice through the intentional deaths of Palestinians via the widespread use of nonmilitants and their schools, mosques, residential areas and medical facilities as human shields to protect terrorists. Palestinians need to lessen their obsession with destroying Israel and instead focus on building better lives for their people.
Donald J. Trump. To his credit, Trump brought about the Abraham Accords that fostered peace between Israel and many Arab nations. However, much of the world recognizes that Trump is largely incompetent, deranged and impotent at solving problems. His proposed actions regarding Palestinians will be a disaster for them and the world. If elected, he promises to deport 10 to 15 million immigrants, which will include as many Arab-Americans and Palestinian-Americans as possible. Those who are not deported are likely to be threatened, injured or killed by Trump supporters, including the Proud Boys and similar groups, who will have free reign under his dictatorship, with few people willing to risk their lives to challenge him or his supporters. Ironically, many Palestinian-Americans are supporting Trump by trying to damage his opponent, President Biden.
There are many things we can do to support a better life for Palestinians, Israelis and everyone affected by this conflict. We must sincerely want to make things better, seek out activities that make sense to us, support those interested in peaceful coexistence and actively reject the “haters”.
