Our society relies on the federal government's accurate health data to run effectively. Is there any doubt that Trump’s administrative flunkies will alter this data in an attempt to placate our deranged President?
Trump recently halted all reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, which collects data from the 50 states and is widely followed by the public health and medical community. If the reports resume, it seems likely that they will be censored by the Trump administration.
We need to create a “CDC in exile”, an alternative method to disseminate these reports and mitigate the damage Trump is causing. It must be done by institutions resistant to Trump’s anger - I suggest the governments of California or New York. They already produce comparable reports, have strong economic power, are used to Trump’s threats and will file lawsuits if necessary. Of course, some state governments may not send their data to California or New York but we should do the best that we can, even if it is not perfect. This will only be necessary until Trump dies or is out of power, assuming his successor is trustworthy and competent.
I have written to the Governor of California but it would be useful if others would also write. Those in the public health sector should also lobby for an alternative to tainted or no data from the U.S. government.
Of course, the federal government will also stop producing reports that show bad economic news, changes due to climate change and anything else that Trump doesn’t like. That must also be addressed.
