Note: Dudley Demented is the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Several years ago, I watched a hypnotist perform and afterward asked, How do we know if the subjects were unconsciously following your commands or just doing it to ‘go along’ with you? What’s the difference, he said?
Similarly, it makes no difference if Trump is lying when he regularly makes outrageous comments or believes them to be true. In either case, he is troubled mentally and is not competent for any responsible position. For example:
13 April 2024: He spoke nonsense at a Pennsylvania rally:
Gettysburg, what an unbelievable battle that was. It was so much, and so interesting, and so vicious and horrible, and so beautiful in so many different ways— it represented such a big portion of the success of this country.
22 June 2024: He had a bizarre speech regarding batteries and sharks.
31 July 2024: Trump’s recent meltdown at the National Association of Black Journal’s convention:
“Is she Indian or is she Black?” he asked, quickly adding, “I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t. Because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she went, she became a Black person. I think somebody should look into that.”
8 August 2024: News conference at Mar-a-lago confirms he is unfit for office:
But with 87 days until Election Day, perhaps it should receive the same focus as Biden’s disastrous debate performance six weeks ago. One of the two major presidential candidates seems disturbingly unwell. He makes false, incoherent and exaggerated statements far more than he tells the truth. He ceaselessly hurls insults, engages in bizarre, often disturbing conspiracy theorizing, rewrites history and offers barely a hint as to what he would do if elected for another term in office.

This is not new. In 2017, 27 psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals concluded in The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump that Trump’s mental health posed a “clear and present danger” to the nation:
Trump is now the most powerful head of state in the world, and one of the most impulsive, arrogant, ignorant, disorganised, chaotic, nihilistic, self-contradictory, self-important, and self-serving. He has his finger on the triggers of a thousand or more of the most powerful thermonuclear weapons in the world. That means he could kill more people in a few seconds than any dictator in past history has been able to kill during his entire years in power.’
Being President is hard work. For example, see Tom Friedman writing about the Middle East conflict. This office requires a vast and accurate knowledge of world history and its leaders, a sophisticated mind that can handle contradictions, regular consultation with experts and a calm and rational demeanor, as well as the intent to hire staff with these qualities. Trump has none of this.
Thus, Donald Trump should not be President.
