Donald Trump is impotent, at least at solving difficult problems.
1. Trump does not understand or care about many major problems affecting the United States, and has made many of these problems worse:
global warming
marked income inequality
hate and hate crimes
reliance on “alternative facts” that have no basis in reality.
2. Trump does not appear to comprehend how to solve difficult problems. He has tried to solve the infrastructure problem by simply announcing, “We will have the best infrastructure program ever”. That’s it. In his mind, he has now solved the problem. If you challenge him about this, you are being disloyal and he will threaten you.
Solving difficult problems requires many actions and strategies that are counter to Trump’s thinking and conduct.
You have to want to solve the problem.
You have to be willing to admit that you don’t understand everything about the problem.
You have to read extensively about the problem and talk candidly with experts who know more about it than you.
You have to have a long term strategic plan.
You have to be able to proceed, step by step, towards your goals, admitting your failures along the way.
President Joe Biden and Democratic public officials have had success in solving some difficult problems and moving in the right direction towards solving them on others. This includes infrastructure, as Heather Cox Richardson noted on the 2nd anniversary of the Infrastructure Bill.
Third, solving difficult problems typically requires discipline to get along with others and bury your own emotions. Yet Trump continues to act as a petulant child. As noted in his recent Washington D.C. testimony, nobody appears to be able to control his behavior.
The judge in Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial despairingly pressed the ex-president’s lawyer: “I beseech you to control him if you can.”
Judge Arthur Engoron’s plea reflected his frustration at an incorrigible witness who boasted Monday about his piles of cash, aimed scathing political attacks and spouted uniquely illogical logic.
But Engoron, who is presiding over the New York trial, also put his finger on a deeper question that will define a singular political figure’s place in history.
And the answer, as always, was no, Trump cannot be controlled. CNN
The United States needs a leader with experience in solving difficult problems. Joe Biden has a strong record, which has been compared to FDR and JFK. We need to support Joe Biden and the Democratic party, starting now. We cannot wait until the November 2024 election. As adults, we have to make the best choice reasonably available for this important position, not sulk because are not getting all that we want.
We need to consider what are we doing today with the life that we are lucky to have. We need to get more politically active and write a check, send an email, compose a letter to the Editor, attend a meeting, join a group (political campaign, issue, organization), consider activities to pursue, talk to our friends and think about how to stay away from evil.
Even the prospect of Trump winning the election is a threat to the United States because our businesses and other institutions cannot properly plan for a future that includes the chaos and irrational behavior associated with a Trump presidency.
I am working to reelect Joe Biden and to elect more Democrats at the federal and state level for the sake of the business community, Americans in general and the rest of the world which relies on our rational and stable leadership. I urge you to do so also.
