In Gaza, I suggest that those who are not actively fighting the terrorist organization Hamas are Hamas puppets, doing the bidding of Hamas, regardless of their personal beliefs.
These Hamas puppets include UNRWA (the United Nations agency that runs Palestinian refugee camps in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria), Gazan journalists, physicians and other aid workers and most Gaza residents, excluding the very young.
Hama rules Gaza with an iron fist - all who work or live there must follow Hamas rules about what they can say or do, upon threat of death. UNRWA, journalists, physicians and other aid workers may be helping Gazans in the short term, but their altruistic activities are manipulated by Hamas to further its own power and legitimize its rule.
Hamas has used worldwide concern about the plight of Gazans to build up its military, repress Gazans and kill Israelis and Jews.
Hamas has an investment portfolio of real estate and other assets worth $500 million and an annual military budget of up to $350 million.
Hamas diverts foreign aid, fuel and construction materials to build its weapons and the vast Gaza metro. This explains, to a large extent, the poverty in Gaza.
As supplies of virtually every basic human necessity dwindle in Gaza, one group in the besieged enclave remains well-stocked: Hamas.
Arab and Western officials say there is substance to Israeli claims of Hamas stockpiling supplies, including desperately needed food and fuel. Hamas, they say, has spent years building dozens of kilometers of tunnels under the strip where it has amassed stores of virtually everything needed for a drawn-out fight. It is a reality that Israel may soon find itself grappling with if it makes good on its threat to invade Gaza.
Hamas has hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel for vehicles and rockets; caches of ammunition, explosives and materials to make more; and stockpiles of food, water and medicine, the officials said. A senior Lebanese official said Hamas, which is estimated to number between 35,000 and 40,000, had enough stocked away to keep fighting for three to four months without resupply. New York Times
Life for the Gazans cannot improve until Hamas is destroyed. Then, aid can be used for the betterment of Gazans and not to strengthen Hamas, there will be an increase in foreign investment and there will be fewer terrorist attacks on Israel or retaliatory responses.
If Hamas persists as a military force and is still running Gaza after this war is over, it will attack Israel again. Hamas knew that attacking Israel would lead to a massive Israeli response killing Gazans. If someone attacked the United States and killed 50,000 Americans (the equivalent to 1,500 Israeli deaths in a country of 10 million), how do we think the US would respond?
Hamas wants Gazans to die at the hands of Israelis, which helps their goal of creating anger against Israel and Jews. So far, it seems to be working.
As a pathologist, I compare Hamas to the Hodgkin Reed-Sternberg cancer cell. The lethal tumors of Hodgkin lymphoma contain only a small number of cancer cells. However, these cancer cells secrete chemicals that cause ordinary cells to promote the malignant process and help the Reed-Sternberg cells survive. Only after the cancer cells are destroyed can these normal cells go back to their normal functions. Similarly, Gazans can only escape their terrorist society and enter the civilized world when Hamas is destroyed.
Hamas and Gazans may not be the same, but Gazans have been supporting Hamas through their inaction.
Gazans and their supporters need to work hard to destroy Hamas:
They should fight back against Hamas, even at the risk of their lives, as the people of Iran and Ukraine are doing.
They should provide information to the Israelis and the United States about where Hamas commanders are living and hiding, where they store their weapons, where the entrances are to the Gaza metro and where the hostages may be hidden.
They should be calling on Hamas to release all of its hostages to ease the crisis.
They should be asking friends and family outside Gaza to help them in these efforts.
Gazans elected Hamas to run their government and they have maintained it for 16 years. They must admit their mistakes and work to destroy Hamas today. They should also be calling for new elections and supporting a government that is concerned about improving their lives and not terrorism.
Fighting Hamas is dangerous, but no more so than letting them thrive and continue to kill and torture Gazans.
It is up to Gazans and their supporters to fight back against Hamas. If they care about their future and that of their children and grandchildren, they must fight back to destroy Hamas.
