Palestinians need leadership focused on building a viable, nonterrorist country

The United States strongly supports the two state solution of a nonterrorist Palestine coexisting with Israel. This solution is also supported by neighboring countries (other than Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Gaza, who want to destroy Israel). Most Israelis support a two state solution although Israel’s Prime Minister does not; however, he may soon be out of power.
The Palestinians need leadership, similar to ROPES, which is focused on building a nonterrorist Palestinian government and creating a better life for Palestinians and their children. Palestinians cannot have a viable state until they publicly reject terrorism and accept Israel’s right to exist. To end the current crisis, Palestinian leaders should pressure the Palestinian government in Gaza to release the hostages and end their terrorist activities.
Building a viable, nonterrorist Palestinian country will be extremely difficult. It was difficult for Americans to create a country, and we had many advantages over Palestinians:
America was based on a British political system with many viable government components, not decades of terrorist and authoritarian rule.
America has always accepted the rule of law other than perhaps some limited actions during the Revolutionary War.
Americans have always been committed to building a better political system and creating better lives.
Although America has lost wars, we only have a minimal amount of bitterness and anger about it.
As recently discussed by Professor Daniel Byman, Georgetown School of Foreign Service, Gaza seems ungovernable and destined to be a failed state, at least in the short term, even after the fighting ends.
However, to move forward to the extent possible, it makes sense for Palestinians to support leaders who:
publicly reject terrorism
accept Israel’s right to exist
start building the foundation for a viable, nonterrorist state
end the weaponizing of Palestinian lives to destroy Israel.
As more Palestinians follow this behavior, a viable Palestine will become more likely.
