The U.S. is considered a superpower in part because of the strength of its military. Unfortunately, under President Trump, our military’s effectiveness is being degraded. Here are three important reasons:
Trump is damaging America’s relationship with its allies. No country can defend its citizens and interests globally by itself. The United States is a superpower in part because of its strong relationships with NATO countries and other allies. However, in his first week, Trump has damaged these relationships by threatening NATO, Canada, Columbia, Denmark, Mexico and Panama. In the short term, these countries may accede to Trump’s demands but in the long term they will be less likely to support a country that treats them so badly.
The first six months will be a time of maximum peril. NATO must from this moment be considered effectively obsolete, without the American security guarantee that has always been its bedrock. We may see new incursions by Russia into Europe – the poor Ukrainians are probably done for, but now it is the Baltics and the Poles who must worry – before the Europeans have time to organize an alternative. China may also accelerate its Taiwanese ambitions. Source
Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth have diverted the focus of the U.S. military away from the most important security risks to our borders, which are not a major security threat. On 7 October 2023, Israel suffered the worst massacre of Jews since Hitler because of the incompetence of its Prime Minister, who directed its military to focus on West Bank settlements instead of terrorist threats. Similarly, we can expect major assaults on Americans or American assets due to Trump’s incompetence regarding military priorities.
Our enemies (Russia, China, Iran and North Korea) know that Trump is insane, Hegseth is incompetent and both are unable to effectively direct the U.S. military. Trump’s public proclamations may appease his followers but Trump and Hegseth lack the management skills for effective action. Their inadequacy may encourage our enemies to test what they can get away with. In addition, many of our soldiers will not fight as effectively for the fascist like government that Trump has created.
Nothing mattered, in the end. Not the probable dementia, the unfathomable ignorance, the emotional incontinence; not, certainly, the shambling, hate-filled campaign, or the ludicrously unworkable anti-policies.
The candidate out on bail in four jurisdictions, the convicted fraud artist, the adjudicated rapist and serial sexual predator, the habitual bankrupt, the stooge of Vladimir Putin, the man who tried to overturn the last election and all of his creepy retinue of crooks, ideologues and lunatics: Americans took a long look at all this and said, yes please.
There is no sense in understating the depth of the disaster. This is a crisis like no other in our lifetimes. The government of the United States has been delivered into the hands of a gangster, whose sole purpose in running, besides staying out of jail, is to seek revenge on his enemies. The damage Donald Trump and his nihilist cronies can do – to America, but also to its democratic allies, and to the peace and security of the world – is incalculable. We are living in the time of Nero. Source

Thank you, Nat. Your summary of exactly what Trump is — what over 77 million Americans “took a long look at” and said “Yes, Please” to — is SPOT ON. My theory is that they’re fine with burning America down to the ground if it means liberals are destroyed too. That’s why they don’t care how horrifying he and his regime are. Hegseth: For the lives and sacrifices of our military women and men to be betrayed in this way — to be under such a man as Hegseth — is an abominable shame and dishonor for America — an eternal stain of broken faith. Steve Schmidt told his son he thought the military was no longer worthy of his son’s service and sacrifices. God damn the contemptible and spineless Senate for confirming him. We all know they don’t care about moral character. Maybe questions at the hearings should have focused a lot more on hypothetical military crises and how Hegseth would deal with them — he would not have had a clue. But probably not even this would have made a difference.
