I support immigrants and immigration, for many reasons:
My family members are immigrants - my grandparents came from Russia, Poland and Hungary over 100 years ago. Of course, almost everyone in the U.S. is an immigrant.
Immigration is the major source of U.S. population growth.
Immigration is good for business and good for the economy. However, immigration must be managed by competent people who actually want to do a good job. Unfortunately, Trump, Vance and Republican officials want to advance their political careers by blaming immigrants for problems they are not causing. Immigration will always be a problem with Trump and Vance because they don’t want to find solutions and want to use immigrants as scapegoats.
Immigrants and their friends should worry about this election. If Trump is elected, he will deport immigrants, even if legal. He has also talked about removing the citizenship of some immigrants or remigrating them. Since Trump is already above the law, it is questionable if the courts will be able to stop him. In addition, we can expect the anti-immigrant hatred to surge, which means the Proud Boys and other Trump supporters can be expected to threaten and attack anyone who looks like immigrants, particularly those from the Middle East, Latin America or Asia. If Trump is elected, we can expect Dearborn, Michigan and other cities with large immigrant populations to become ghost towns.
The ancient sage Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me.” Immigrants and their supporters should support Harris and the Democrats in this election for the simple reason that they will do their best to protect immigrants in contrast to Trump and the Republicans, who will continue to disparage and threaten immigrants. If you are sensible, other differences with Harris or the Democrats pale compared to you or your friends being attacked or deported.
What can you do? Other than voting Democratic, review the video above, in which Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor, gives suggestions.
