Although a lifelong liberal, I recognize that conservatism is a legitimate point of view. Regrettably, today’s Republican party is just a group of Donald Trump’s cult followers with no principles other than doing whatever he wants to do at the moment.
As a moral and political matter, I remain flummoxed that a once-great party could nominate a felon, a civilly adjudicated rapist and fraudster, and leader of an insurrection against our democracy. When a movement celebrates illegal, immoral and even violent action, Americans should see flashing red lights. Trump’s party is telling us he is beyond morality, beyond the law. That’s a sign of authoritarian ambition. Jennifer Rubin
The Republican Party is unlikely to divorce itself from Trump soon, and people of integrity should want to distance themselves from Trump, Vance and their jailed allies. Thus, a new party is needed.
Several years ago, I tried contacting conservatives who rejected Trump to move this idea forward but found no interest. Are any conservatives interested? A legitimate conservative party would support:
the rule of law and the Constitution
limited government, even concerning social issues that they disagree with
a strong military to be used against countries that are enemies of democracy
fiscal responsibility
free markets
House Speaker Mike Johnson agrees, at least on his website, but his party spends its time “sucking up” to Donald Trump, who believes he is the law and who has no coherent policy on most issues.
To strengthen democratic values, and the rule of law and to oppose Russia, conservatives should support and vote for Kamala Harris for President and Democrats at the State and Federal level. They should then start the hard work of forming a new, legitimate conservative party.
