Each one of us needs to get a little more involved in the political process. There are many things that we can do today even though we are otherwise busy. We can:
Pick a candidate, organization, institution or cause and get more involved by attending a meeting, writing a check or volunteering to help
Write a letter to a public official or the editor of a publication
Start our own efforts to promote a cause
Find out what other people with similar interests are doing
Why should we get more involved?
1. As President Kennedy indicated above, in our democracy, we are the boss and hold power over the direction of our country, although it is shared with others. We have a responsibility to be involved and not to expect others to do our job. If we are not involved, it is our fault when bad things happen.
2. Getting more involved politically may make us more successful and happier in life.
3. Political change is often slow, but what we do does make a difference, even if we don’t see it:
Our activities often seem unimportant because, for long periods, no changes or only minor changes are evident. However, if enough people engage in enough activities, then at some point we may see bursts of activity that will lead to obvious change, such as the tobacco bans in the workplace referenced above, the legalization of same-sex marriages or the implementation of widespread curbside recycling. We just have to keep at it until the major change occurs. This is based on the theory of self-organized criticality. Source.
Each one of us has different interests and different abilities but we should decide on something important to work on and get started now.
