Don’t pass up this opportunity!
As Executive Director of the Detroit College Promise scholarship program for 7 years, I was shocked to discover that many students didn’t get our scholarships just because they did not apply, even though the application process was relatively simple.
The State of Michigan now offers a free community college program with minimal requirements, so don’t miss out. This information is from Bridge Michigan:
Who is eligible for the program?
Students must meet several requirements.
FAFSA: They must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is a federal form that helps schools determine what scholarships, grants, loans and work-study options students can qualify for.
Residency: The student must be a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous calendar year. If a student is a dependent, their parent must also be a state resident.
Graduate: The student must earn a diploma, certificate of completion or high school equivalency certificate in 2023 or after.
Enroll: Students must enroll full-time in community college within 15 months of graduating high school.
High school seniors often fail to get things done. As parents or friends, we should prod them to sign up for this free education.
P.S. This free community college program is another reason to consider moving to Michigan, where our government protects the rights of women, LGTBQ individuals and people of color; other states are chipping away at these rights.
P.P.S. Did you know that many local scholarships are not given because nobody applies? Those who create the scholarships want to give away the money but cannot find interested students. Please learn about local scholarships by asking several counselors at school and your friends or checking online.
