Yesterday was National Voter Registration Day in the United States. Voting, I believe, is the responsibility of all U.S. citizens. It makes our democracy stronger and also makes us better individuals. Effective government requires our participation, and that includes voting. Although not required by law, it is a moral responsibility that prior generations have fought and died for - the right to choose our elected representatives in free and fair elections.
For the 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024 elections, I have sponsored a Voter Challenge for these Michigan communities near me (Berkley, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak and Southfield) that provides awards to communities based on their voter turnout. Winners are based on the official voter turnout from Oakland County Elections and the winning communities select charities to receive the awards.
With early voting and absentee ballots available to all eligible voters, I believe EVERY community should aim for a turnout of 90% or more.
In Michigan, absentee ballots are available on 26 September 2024 and early voting starts in October 2024 so all eligible voters (U.S. citizens at least 18 years of age by Election Day, a Michigan resident for at least 30 days by Election Day, not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison) should make sure they are registered to vote, start thinking about how they plan to vote (early voting, absentee voting, voting on election day) and start learning about the candidates.
